Webfilter:
Oct 24, 2008
The new Iprism web filter has been installed. If you have any questions about how the filter works and/or if you are experiencing problems contact the support team at filter@hbni.net.
When submitting requests for support please be specific and descriptive. It makes it much simpler and easier to solve problems if the conditions under which they occur are properly described and documented. Also identify to the support team who you are and how you can be contacted.
If you know of a useful site that is being blocked please use the ‘request for access’ interface to submit your request for access. To expedite your request please give a brief description of the site, why you are seeking permanent access, and most importantly identify yourself and give contact information. Many requests are received each day and not all of them are valid and/or legitimate. Some come from children or young people requesting access to content that is not desirable.

Why do we need a web filter?
We need a filter for the following reasons:
- It has been mandated by the leadership of all the member communities.
- We are providing Internet to schools, and because there is a lot of inapproperiate content on the Internet we must do our best to clean the Internet available as much as possible.
Why are useful and harmless sites so often blocked?
Sites are blocked by the web filter based on which category or rating they fall into. If a site is new to the Internet and/or has not yet been rated or categorized then it will be blocked if it harmful or not. We have to block this category known as other or unrated sites because there are many new sites out there each day that are bad and have no rating even if the majority of the unrated sites are okay sites.
Does the filter block 100% of all bad sites?
No. No filter is capable of blocking all of the bad content. Just as hard as filter companies are working to give us the capacity to block bad sites there are other organizations or individuals working to create or find ways around filters.
How long does it take for a request access request to be processed?
Depending on the number of requests received your request may be processed within hours or it could take up to 48 hours.
How do I get immediate access to a site that I know is okay, but is blocked?
You can use the ‘override’ feature of the filter to gain access to all blocked sites. Each community has their own username and password that gives them the capacity to perform overrides. Please talk to the person in your community who manages your local network for that access/override information. If no one in your community has that information then get your network manager or management to request that information from the filter support team at filter@hbni.net.
How are the sites put into categories and rated?
The sites are rated according specific criteria which is based on the website content. A complete listing of the filter categories can be viewed here. The filter is set to block certain categories.
